- Abstract
This article ties in with the current debate on the transformation of moral values in and through organizations. Although more recent neoinstitutionalist works now model the expected divergence between assertions and practice in a more nuanced way than older works, they do not shed any conceptual light on the interactions within normatively formatted organizational structures. Our extension of the communication theory model focuses precisely on these intersubjective negotiation processes. It is based on the results of an ethnographic study on highly selective selection procedures for “talented” managers of corporations, which, in addition to the classic performance evaluation, also explicitly want to take normatively charged concepts such as diversity and equal opportunities into account. We conclude that the processing of such conflicting values can be described as translation cascades. We condense these conceptually in the analytical distinction between formal and situational translations of morality.
