Abstract

About 10 years ago, a set of 6 transportable absolute gravimeters were accomplished by Prof. J.E. Faller and coworkers. With this instruments, the engagement increased considerably to establish worldwide gravity stations with an accuracy of 0.1 μm/s2 or even better. On the basis of a homogeneous precise global network, gravity changes of continental and global scale my be detected. Combining absolute and relative gravity measurements, local and regional networks are installed to monitor gravity variations due to land subsidence/ uplift or other subsurface mass movements in geodynamic active areas. An additional task is the improvement (strengthening, densification and extension) of national base networks. Since 1986 the Institut für Erdmessung, University of Hannover, contributes to the objectives mentioned above.
