Abstract

Fluid-dynamic investigations were carried out in five different airlift tower loop reactors, two of which were equipped with a draft tube and three with an outer loop, and with overall volumes of 0. 06 to 4 m**3. Model media were used as well as fermentation broths. The latter measurements were carried out during the production of cell mass, enzymes, primary, and/or secondary metabolites. Only a few aspects are taken in consideration: the influence of the construction of the loop on the fluid-dynamic behavior, the position of the tracer injection on the mixing, and the interrelationship between the liquid circulation rate, medium properties and performance of microorganisms. It is shown that there are complex interrelations, which are only partly understood.
