Abstract

A reliable, vertically operated furnace assembly has been designed for high temperatures (up to 1400°C) and long-duration experiments of several days or weeks in internally heated, Ar-medium pressure vessels working up to 10 kbar. Useful volumes with vertical temperature gradients <±10°C over 3.5-4 cm (o.d. = 1 cm) are available at high pressures. The high-temperature furnace design described here has been used to study H2O solubility in granitic and SiO2 melts, and to measure the viscosity of hydrous granitic melts under controlled temperature, pressure, and H2O content. It is also intended to permit experimental studies of high-temperature equilibria and phase relationships in andesitic to basaltic systems. -from Authors
