Abstract

The mechanical behaviour of fibre reinforced MMCs and CMCs is strongly related to the nanostructure and chemistry of the interlayers between fibre and matrix. Especially the bonding strength and the internal friction coefficient between the constituents are valuable parameters for microstructural engineering of composites. Corresponding interlayer phenomena, revealed by high-voltage and high-resolution electron microscopy including analytical techniques, are presented as they occur in various carbon fibre reinforced magnesium-aluminium alloys and SiC (Nicalon) fibre reinforced Duran glasses. Their influence on the materials properties is discussed taking into account the results of scanning electron microscope in situ deformation tests.
