Abstract

The asymmetric beta -radiation of polarized **8Li(T// one-half equals 0. 84s) nuclei, produced by capture of polarized thermal neutrons, was used to measure the spin-lattice relaxation time T//1 of **8Li in liquid **7Li between the melting point and 1100 K in fields B//0 equals 0. 01 minus 0. 7T. T//1 proved to be field independent. In liquid LiT//1T decreases continuously down to 236 sK at 1100 K. It is argued that on the one hand contributions to T//1 in the liquid additional to that due to the magnetic hyperfine interaction in pure Li can probably be excluded. On the other hand, the available experimental values of the Knight shift K seem to be practically temperature independent so that the Korringa product K**2 T//1T must decrease with T. Thus, in liquid Li, there is some indication of a mechanism contributing differently to T//1 and K.
