Abstract

This study introduces mission profile-based operation strategies to reduce the risks of random failure and wear-out failure in a three-level active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter for future electrified aircraft propulsion systems. These strategies include the concept of reconfigurable two-stage variable DC-link voltage to minimize the random device failure induced by cosmic radiation. Additionally, an adaptive hybrid-PWM strategy is proposed to minimize the wear-out failure induced by thermal-mechanical stress. This study conducts a reliability analysis for a case study of an electric short-range aircraft, the results demonstrate a significant enhancement in the reliability of the inverter system with the proposed strategies.
