Abstract

The ability of soils to reduce the impact of potentially toxic substances on the biosphere makes them important sinks for environmental chemicals, because of their inherent filtering and buffering capacities and owing to decomposition reactions. Geoecological research with special respect to chemicals' dynamics leads to the prediction of the buffering qualities of individual soils. Six different laboratory and field research methods are described and critically discussed. A comprehensive interpretation technique of geoscientific maps is presented, which permits to approximately predict the resilience or buffering capacity of soils or environmental sections with special respect to selected chemicals. -from English summary
