Abstract

Besides grinding the hard turning is widely used in indus- trial applications. This is often reported in literature either by end users or scientific researchers. Compared to grinding one advantage of hard turning is a higher flexibility. This often leads to reduced throughput times and costs. For high require- ments on surface integrity grinding is still used instead of hard turning. This is due to the high influence of tool wear on sur- face integrity in hard turning. Furthermore, there is a lack of knowledge on the basic mechanisms, which influence the surface integrity in hard turning. In this article basic investigations on the influence of cutting speed, feed rate and tool wear on forces, chip forma- tion and surface integrity are made. A Finite-Element process model is developed and compared to the results of experi- mental investigations.
