Abstract

The lakes and rivers of the Pleistocene sandy landscapes in North Germany are exposed to a progressive accumulation of nutrients, indicated especially by changing shore vegetation and an increase of electrolytes in the water. The natural water eutrophication advances gradually, but is nowadays considerably accelerated by anthropogenic factors. The National Park 'Heiliges Meer', located on the edge of the Northern German Lowlands, offers ideal preconditions for comparing investigations of water ecology, since it includes a number of lakes with different sizes, ages and trophic levels within an uniform surrounding. The data, having been collected from this area since the beginning of the century, indicate a large complex of different eutrophication factors resulting from natural and man-made processes. Standardized investigation methods allow the comparison of information about all eutrophication factors and reduce validation time. Nutrient-poor water landscapes should be integrated into efforts to protect heathland areas since they stabilize nutrient-poor water complexes trophically.
