Abstract

Rehabilitation and strengthening of existing concrete bridges with UHPC overlay in the Netherlands. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been used in the Netherlands since the 1980s to rehabilitate and strengthen industrial floors and pavements, for example. The procedure, known as the Compact Reinforced Composite (CRC) principle, involves applying a thin layer of UHPC to the surface. This allows surfaces to be quickly repaired and returned to service. As many of the bridges built in the Netherlands between 1960 and 1980 show deficiencies in terms of load-bearing capacity and durability, the use of UHPC in bridge construction acc. to the CRC principle was introduced by Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Watermanagement) as early as the 1990s, and a hybrid reinforced UHPC overlay was developed as a standard solution for the rehabilitation and strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges. In the meantime, numerous bridges in the Netherlands have been rehabilitated and strengthened using this procedure. This article will first briefly introduce the hybrid reinforced UHPC overlay and then report in detail on its application using the Voorster Bridge as an example.
