- Abstract
Highly precise Digital Terrain Models (DTM) of the Wadden Sea are an essential data source for various tasks and applications in the field of coast protection and oceanography. However, the acquisition of height data is in general difficult, especially for the generation of extensive areas, due to the cyclic flooding. Therefore, in regard to accuracy and timeliness limitations of the derived DTM normally have to be accepted. Airborne Laserscanning allows obtaining high accurate height data of the mudflat surface for large areas within a short time period. Based on these measurements a precise DTM can be determined as long as specific limitations of the method are considered. A new workflow to generate a DTM in the Wadden Sea from Lidar data is presented in this study. For each of the two major steps - namely classification of water points and the extraction of structure lines - an innovative algorithm is proposed. Both algorithms are tested on the basis of examples. The results prove that the presented methods deliver precise, reliable results and enable the calculation of accurate DTM.
