A counterexample in coagulation theory

Abstract

Two models of interacting polymers, both within Smoluchovski's theory, are considered. The first model has purely diagonal reaction rates and shows gelation. The second model has the same diagonal reaction rates but also some nondiagonal ones; the second model does not show gelation. Hence, contrary to intuition, gelation can be destroyed by an increase in the reaction rates. The example also disproves a conjecture stating that the diagonal reaction rates are the determining factor for gelation.
