Abstract

With increased available data in geotechnical engineering, it is essential to research geotechnical reliability analysis, including statistical data. Among the many research methods, the random finite element method applies a random field of strength parameters selected from a statistical distribution to geotechnical engineering. Thus, it has become prevalent in geotechnical engineering analysis. This paper analyses the reliability of landslides’ stability with the spatial variability for their reliability using the random finite element method based on landslide model experiments. Firstly, the random finite element method is studied, including the characterization method of the random field and the deterministic stability analysis method. The implementation procedure of the random finite element method is described subsequently. Finally, the effects of the random field variability coefficient and the fluctuation range of the random field on the failure probability are investigated based on a landslide model. The results of this case study show that the random finite element method has excellent applicability and potential for landslide reliability analysis. Moreover, the coefficient of variation and fluctuation range of the random field considerably influence the reliability of the landslide.
